Fundamental Basis: Top10 China builds its selection based on the existing national standards and methods. This includes the national testing and energy efficiency standards, the Energy Conservation Certification program and the Energy Label.

Market Availability: Top10 China only lists products that are available on the Chinese market, which means it does not include pioneer products that are still at experimental level. Top10 China uses market research data from professional market research agencies such as GFK, complementary to self-claimed data by the manufacturers and other publicly available information such as Car Fuel Consumption Label from Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, etc.

Conformity Test: Top10 China conducts conformity tests to check data reliability. In 2010, 30% of selected products (fix-speed air conditioners, refrigerators, and monitors) purchased from the market were sent to national testing lab CHEARI (China Household Electric Appliance Research Institute) and tested according to relevant Chinese standards. A comparison test using Chinese, American and European standards was also made.

3: When ranking products, does Top10 consider other factors besides energy efficiency?

Yes, energy efficiency is the key factor for the selection but not the only indicator. For cars, the pollutant emission is considered. For washing machine, the washing ability and water consumption are both listed as performance indicators.

4: What's the difference between Top10 China lists and other Energy Efficiency product lists?

As an international organization, Top10 China is financially independent and has no commercial cooperation with any interest groups and stakeholders. The selection is transparent and all the selection criteria and data can be found on
As the project focuses on energy efficiency, Top10 China is able to keep alert to the market trends and give advices accordingly. Top10 lists are dynamically changed, which means new products will be added into and the old unqualified products will be removed at the same time.
Top10 China benefits from international data exchange with Toptens in USA and Europe.

5: Does Top10 mean ‘10’ best products?

Top10 doesn’t mean exactly 10 products for each product category, this might be a bit unfair for the 11th product with very little performance difference. The cut-off level for each product is drawn around the 10th products on the ranking lists, when there is a significant difference on energy performance. Normally it would be 8-15.

6: How often does Top10 update its lists?

Normally every three months, but it depends on the market. If best products are entering the market faster, the updating could be less than 3 months and vice versa.

7: What if a new product is super efficient but not in Top10 list?

The dynamic market changes every minute. Top10 regularly collects the data and make the selection. The new product will be identified in the data updating. After the verification, the new product will be listed on the

8: How does Top10 China present the information?

Top10 believes too many choices equals to no choice, so it focuses solely on the best available technology and lists only the ten most energy efficient products currently available in Chinese stores. For comparison, one generic ‘bad’ product is also listed. The bad product is not shown with brand and type but it exists on the market. This gives consumers a more direct understanding how big the difference may be between a highly efficient product and a product that is not energy efficient. On the same page, the visitor will find the selection criteria and consumer tips, providing advice for how to use products in a smarter way to maximize energy savings and thus reduce the electricity bill.
Each product on the list links to a separate page with all the data including energy efficiency, electricity/water consumption and estimated costs for the energy used during the life time of the product.

9: How does Top10 China affect policies?

Top10 China is in continuous dialogue with policy makers. It examines and analyses market development trends and shares this information with policy makers for energy efficiency standard development in China, Top10 China collaborates with government agencies such as VECC (Vehicle Emission Control Centre) and CNIS (China National Institute of Standardization) to present the research results to the policy makers to promote the higher energy efficiency levels and higher requirements of the subsidy programs, etc.
