Air conditioner is the one of the appliances that can adjust the temperature and humidity of the air in the room. Do you really need an air conditioner?

Along with the price decrease, air conditioner has become a usual household appliance in China. It brings great comfort and convenience, but it also increases the energy bills significantly. Do you really need the heating function?

Cooling is the basic function of an air conditioner, while about 75% of all the air conditioners on the market have the heating function. If there is no urgent need of heating or the heating time is short, the consumers can choose the cooling only air conditioners. Because in the same working condition, the price of the cooling only air conditioner is lower while the efficiency is higher.

How to make the choices between fix-speed and inverter air conditioner?

There are two different kinds of air conditioners - fixed speed air conditioner and inverter air conditioner. Generally, the energy efficiency of inverter air conditioner is higher than the fixed speed. Because it uses the variable speed controller for the compressor to fit the changing working load. Inverter air conditioner has particular advantage in the long time running.  The price of the inverter air conditioner is higher than the fixed speed one.

In China, different measurement methods and indicators are used to measure the efficiency of the fixed speed air conditioner and inverter air conditioner. For the cooling, fixed speed air conditioner uses Energy efficiency ratio (EER), while inverter air conditioner uses Annual Performance Factor (APF); for the heating, fixed speed air conditioner uses Coefficient Of Performance (COP). EER is not comparable with the APF and COP, because of the usage of different measurement methods and units.

How to calculate the needs of the cooling capacity?

Cooling capacity is the main indicator of the air conditioning performance. The cooling capacity should be chosen based on the working conditions. If the cooling capacity is too small, there will be no cooling effects; while if the cooling capacity is too high, some cooling capacity will be wasted.

The most relevant factor to determine the cooling capacity is the room space. Generally speaking, one square meter should have the cooling capacity between 150W to 220W. How to choose the high efficiency air conditioner?

The energy efficiency indicator of the air conditioner is called “Energy Efficiency Ratio“(EER). It’s the ration between the cooling capacity and cooling power input. The better energy efficiency air conditioner has higher EER value. It means under the same cooling effect, the higher EER air conditioner consumes less energy. That’s why it saves the energy. The EER can be found on the energy label stuck on the product. The energy label is the mandatory label to disclose product’s energy efficiency to the consumers.

Due to the upgrading of the energy efficiency of the air conditioners, there are two parallel labels on the market. In the 2004 edition, there are 5 grades, while in the 2010 edition, only 3 grades are left. In the new grading system: grade 3 the minimum requirement and grade 1 is the best. Consumers should take the 2010 version as the purchasing reference.

2. How to use?

Buying a high efficiency air conditioner does not mean the energy saving. The actual electricity consumption of the air conditioner depends on the working conditions and load.

Increase the insulation of the room

Insulation is one of the key factors related to the air conditioner’s operation. The high insulation room can reduce the heating exchange between indoor and outdoor, thus reduce the heating or cooling capacity loss. Users can implement building energy conservation renovation to increase the insulation.

Reduce the heating sources within the room when cooling

The basic function of cooling is to remove the heat from the room by the air conditioner. The more heat in the room; the longer running time of the air conditioner; and the more electricity consumption. The necessary heating sources should be reduced to increase the working load of the air conditioner, including of avoiding the direct sunshine and reducing the usage of energy using products, etc.

Use the air conditioner in reasonable time

The formula to calculate the electricity consumption is:

Electricity consumption=Cooling power × Running time

The EER is a relative value. The real electricity consumption is decided by the power input and working time. If the working time is very long, the very high efficiency air conditioner still consumes a lot of energy. So the goal of energy saving is not reached. There is a common mistake: buying the high efficiency products while increasing the using time, so the total electricity consumption is also increased, which is not energy saving.

Set reasonable room temperature

The running time of the air conditioner depends on the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor. The lower the indoor temperature, the higher the temperature difference (when cooling). And the running time and working load is longer and higher.  The recommended temperature difference is between 5~7℃. If the temperature difference is increased by 1℃, the electricity consumption will be accordingly increased by 6~10%.

26℃ is the recommendation from the national regulation. And scientific research shows that this 26℃ is a better choice for the health and comfort.

Close the door and windows and use the shelters

The air conditioning includes two processes: adjusting and maintaining. Users should close the door and window and use the shelters such as the curtains to increase the insulation capacity to reduce capacity lost and the electricity consumption.

3. How to maintain?

Clean the air conditioner regularly.

Cleaning the air conditioner is the key of maintenance. It brings the following benefits: keep the cooling performance; reduce the cooling time; extend the life time. However, most of the users do not pay enough attention to the maintenance. After the long time running or out of operation without clean, the efficiency is reduced significantly due to the cooling agent loss and dust, etc. This makes the air conditioner’s energy saving potential be discounted remarkably after some years of usage.

The air conditioner should be cleaned 2 to 3 times a year. The first clean should be finished before the first using for the summer; the second clean should be done during the summer; and the third clean comes to the ending of the usage of the air conditioner of one season. It is recommended that the air conditioner clean should be done by the professional and reputable companies or individuals.

4. How to recycle?

The typical life time of an air condition is between 10 to 15 years. The waste air conditioners contain environmental pollutants and also a lot of recyclable and reusable resources. They should be recycled by qualified recycling companies.
