The Microcomputer has been popular since the 1970s and now it is one of the most important tools in a human’s life, as it is used for both learning and working. Currently China possesses more than 300 million computers whose power consumption exceeds 90 billion kilowatt-hours each year, so how to improve a computer’s efficiency and reduce its consumption is significant to energy conservation and emission reduction.

Choose a computer

1. Choose your computer according to your actual requirements

A computer’s total energy consumption consists of the sum of each part’s energy consumption. Therefore different configurations directly affect the total power consumption. The devices with high power consumption are: CPU, display card, hard disk, main board, CD-driver, RAM, audio card, network card, etc. The CPU consumes a large amount of energy. However, a survey shows that much time is spent waiting for tasks rather than fully loaded work. Furthermore, a faster CPU brings about high power consumption, increased temperature and other problems. It is not necessary to choose an oversized screen, as this results in a greater weight, enlarged power consumption and increased price. Therefore you should choose a computer that suits your actual needs rather than blindly pursing high performance and configuration.

2. Try to choose a laptop if possible

With the improvement in technology, the performance and price of a laptop is close to that of a desktop computer. However laptops consume far less electricity than desktop computers. Generally a laptop’s  power is about 50W while a desktop’s power is more than 100W, with the same working load, the laptop needs only 1/3 to 1/2  the energy consumption of the desktop.

Save energy in the using process

1. We suggest you leave the computer on standby if the pause in use is less than an hour. It is better to turn off the computer if the break is more than an hour, as turning off the monitor during an extended break not only saves power but will also prolong the monitor’s service lifetime.

2. We suggest you always shut down the computer after finishing your work and unplugging the power plug or turning off the switch on the patch panel. In this way the computer’s standby power can be lessened and the mainboard’s power consumption (3-5W) is reduced. When the system is off, peripheral equipment is still consuming power and the equipment’s life will be shortened because of high heating, caused by extended connection to the power source.

3. Lowering the brightness of the monitor. Will not only save energy but also protect your eyesight and relieve eye fatigue.

4. Do not use a built-in CD-ROM or FDD when watching DVDs or VCDs. It is better to watch it after copying it to a hard disk, as CD-ROMs high-speed rotation will consume electricity.  

5. Computers require constant maintenance. Too much dust will influence the heat dissipation and the brightness. Regular cleaning will prolong the computer’s working life.

6. Exit unnecessary programs

Only load the required programs and related security system. Do not start unnecessary ones.

7. Periodical cleaning of system programs

Uninstall unnecessary programs and temporary system files.
