Choose the right refrigerator/freezer size
Bigger refrigerators need more energy than smaller ones. Therefore it is important to select the right size for your household:
Bigger refrigerator volume, smaller freezer volume
Choose the refrigerator/freezer according to your living customs. Most households need a lower volume of the freezer. Therefore, choose the refrigerator/freezer with a bigger refrigerator capacity.
Put the refrigerator in the right place
The refrigerator should not be close to hot equipment: oven, radiator, sunny window, etc. It will need more energy when close to a warmer environment. The back of the refrigerator should be able to ventilate easily.
Avoid leaving the refrigerator too full
If the refrigerator/freezer is overstuffed, the convection inside the container becomes weak so that the food goes bad easily.
Let the food cool down first
Putting hot food directly in the refrigerator causes it to consume more electricity to refrigerate. Let the hot food cool down before putting it in the refrigerator, which can reduce its energy consumption.
Proper temperature for the refrigerator
The proper temperature range of the refrigerator is 5°C. For each degree cooler, the electricity consumption increases 5% per degree.
The proper freezer temperature is - 18°C.
Use a refrigerator thermometer in the compartment to check that the temperature is just about right all the times.
Make sure the door closes tightly
Always shut the refrigerator door after use immediately. Secure that the rubber gaskets of the door are clean and the door closes tightly.
