According to the statistics of National Bureau of Statistics of China, in the first 11 months in 2011, the rice production of China is 790 million tons and the average annual rice consumption of each Chinese is 100 kilograms.

As the biggest rice production and consumption country, China is also the largest market for rice cookers. In China, almost every household has a rice cooker; some even has two or three.

In the first 3 quarters in 2011, 130 million rice cookers are produced in China (data source: China National Information Institute), every 100 households have more than 100 rice cookers. In average, every household holds more than 1 rice cooker.

In our traditional thinking, air conditioners, refrigerators or other large household appliances consume much more energy than small appliances, such as microwaves, rice cookers, but is that really the case?

Top10 China did a simple analysis: the average electricity consumption of a Top10 rice cooker is 0.35-0.4 KWH per time (boil from raw rice to cooked rice and keep it warm for 30 minutes), if we assume one household only use rice cooker once a day, the energy consumption will be higher than the one day consumption of a Top10 refrigerator (0.27-0.35 KWH). And that’s just for Top10 products, which are top energy efficient products. If you look into the energy consumption of regular rice cookers, they consume 36% more energy than Top10 products. It’s like you have 2 refrigerators working at home at the same time!

China has 350 million households, if every household will replace their rice cooker with a Top10 one, the whole country will save 16 TWH each year, which equals to 1/6 of the annual production of Sanxia Hydroelectric Station.
